Going viral means that a photo, video or similar on a social media channel achieves a particularly high number of views in a short period of time. How many views is viral?

The number of views required for a video to go viral varies greatly from platform to platform. It is important to take into account the content, the audience on the platform and the trend.

In general, however, it can be said that if a video generates hundreds of thousands of views in a short period of time, it can be called viral. Below I give a guideline for different social media platforms, from which approximate guideline values a viral video is considered viral:

How Many Views Is “Viral” on TikTok?

TikTok is known for its short videos. First, the video is played to a small group. If this group interacts well with your video, the video is played to more and more people in the same way. If the video generates a million views within a few days, you can assume that it will go viral. If it reaches more than 3 million views by the end of the week, you are to be congratulated. Your video is officially viral.

How Many Views Is “Viral” on YouTube?

It's a little more difficult to determine on YouTube. It is much more difficult to achieve many views in a short period of time than on TikTok, for example. In addition, views are also worth more on YouTube, as your video is watched for longer and you can therefore exert a greater influence.

Language also plays a major role. In English-speaking countries, it logically takes significantly more views than in Germany, as there are more potential English-speaking viewers to engage almost the entire population than German ones.

Therefore, in my opinion, a video can be recognized as viral after 1,000,000 views.

How Many Views is “Viral” on Instagram?

Instagram provides a home for up to 2 billion people every month. Billions of videos are viewed every day.

It's clear that you therefore need more views than on YouTube for a video to be considered viral.

That's why I base the number on TikTok.

Your video should have reached a million views within a few days and more than 3 million views after a week for it to be considered viral.

What makes a video go viral?

While there is no magic formula to make a video go viral, many of the most successful clips have commonalities that promote success:

  • Appeal to emotions - Content that evokes strong emotional responses from viewers, such as joy, compassion or surprise, is often shared. Videos that address personal or universal issues often create a deep connection with viewers and encourage them to share the content.

  • Innovation and freshness - Viral videos often stand out from the crowd with their unusual approaches or fresh ideas. Instead of following the same old trends, they offer a new angle or a special creative touch that others haven't seen before.

  • Comprehensibility for a wide audience - A video will go viral more easily if it is accessible to a large group. Content that is easy to understand or appeals to a wider audience through visual elements, simple language or subtitles has a higher chance of success.

  • Crisp formats - Shorter videos grab viewers faster and offer immediate added value. At a time when attention spans are getting shorter and shorter, content that arouses interest within a few seconds is particularly successful.

  • Professional look & feel - High-quality production can make all the difference. Well-filmed videos, clear audio quality and thoughtful editing not only create a professional impression, but also help to capture and hold the attention of viewers.

  • Unexpected twists - Surprises make videos exciting and memorable. An unexpected twist, an original punchline or a startling effect will keep viewers entertained and increase the chances of the content being shared. Viewers love to be surprised, especially when it comes to the end of the video.
